Are Dentures Part of General Dentistry Services?

Dentures are one of the more common methods of tooth replacement and they often fall under the category of general dentistry services. Understanding what dentures are and who they are for can help you decide whether they or another type of general dentistry service is right for you.

A review of dentures in general dentistry

General dentistry services vary for each general dentist. However, most offer dentures as a long-term way of treating missing teeth. The following is a review of the use of dentures in general dentistry, including insights into when to consider dentures treatment, how the treatment process works, and what to expect when caring for dentures in the long term.

What are considered to be general dentistry services?

General dentistry includes the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of most oral health and dental trauma concerns, which includes tooth loss. General dentists do all they can to prevent tooth loss through preventive techniques such as routine cleanings, and restoration procedures such as root canal therapy. However, tooth loss can occur regardless of efforts to prevent it. When this occurs, general dentists can replace missing teeth with full or partial dentures. Many may also offer dental implants and implant-supported dentures, as well.

Dentures for multiple tooth replacements

As mentioned, there are several ways to replace missing teeth. Perhaps the most common method is with the use of traditional dentures. This refers to a set of replacement teeth that rest upon and are supported by the gums. They look similar to natural teeth and help the patient with chewing food and talking. For a single missing tooth or a section of missing teeth, the general dentist may recommend partial dentures, whereas complete dentures are required for replacing all teeth on the top and bottom row.

When to consider dentures for tooth replacement

Dentures are a good option for patients with one or more missing teeth who want a long-term solution to tooth replacement for the most affordable cost. When compared to other options such as dental implants and fixed bridges, dentures are often much more affordable. They also do not require as invasive of a treatment process as dental implants require, which makes them more suitable for those who are unwilling or unable to go through a surgical procedure and who do not want a long wait time to receive their new teeth.

How to care for dentures

The lifespan of dentures depends on how well the patient cares for them. With proper care, dentures last anywhere from six to 10 years before they need replacement to ensure an ideal fit. The general dentist should provide detailed instructions on how to keep dentures clean and damage-free, which involves cleaning them regularly and avoiding eating certain hard or sticky foods, along with practicing good oral hygiene.
